Glee creator Ryan Murphy expects us to believe that high school kids randomly break into song to express their feelings. But he does not expect us to believe that they keep showing up past senior year, according to a recent interview with News.Com.Au.
"Every year we're going to populate a new group," Murphy says. "There's nothing more depressing than a high schooler with a bald spot." The first graduates -- presumably including Rachel (Lea Michele), Finn (Cory Monteith), Quinn (Dianna Agron), Kurt (Chris Colfer), Puck (Mark Salling) and the rest -- will take their leave in 2012.
Murphy has already begun rotating in new characters like Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet). Next season, we'll see even more unfamiliar faces among the new crop of freshman arriving at McKinley High.
Is it a good idea to keep reeling in new people to keep the show fresh? It's certainly a departure from the usual, teen drama strategy. Beverly Hills 90210, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dawson's Creek all more or less tagged along with their major characters as they went off to local colleges. (The 90210 crew didn't even move on to their college years until somewhere around Season 8!)
Hopefully, Murphy's plan to gradually rotate characters in and out will protect the show from the ratings slide that befell ABC's Scrubs -- which in 2009 replaced its cast in just one season. It was canceled the following May.
Glee's viewers, on the other hand, will have already connected with the new characters by the time their old favorites are graduating. All said, most viewers would at least grudgingly agree that Murphy's plan is a smart way to keep the show vital. But will the current series regulars agree? Probably not.
